Founder's Message

As the world’s energy consumption is expected to increase 44 percent by 2030, our reliance on carbon-based energy sources will grow. This will adversely impact the environment due to increased emissions of greenhouse gases. Creating a clean energy-oriented economy is an inevitable solution to addressing our global energy challenges.

In the United States, the Obama Administration has developed a bold green agenda that is anchored on the twin pillars of increasing US energy security and creating millions of jobs in the renewable energy sector. Reducing the need for carbon-based energy is not just a matter of U.S national security; it is a global imperative in view of the economic and environmental implications.

A recent Pricewater study, "A Roadmap for Europe and Africa" concludes that Europe could have 100% renewable energy by 2050 Europe and North Africa could obtain all of their electricity from renewable energy by 2050, if the concept is supported by a single European power market united with a similar market in North Africa.

In Asia, according to GlobalData, the wind sector will account for the largest part of the renewable energy development in the region. China, India, Japan and Australia combined will add approximately 57,400 MW of additional wind capacity during 2008-15, representing a 47.4% increase over the total world wind power capacity in 2008. China and India are expected to be the major drivers of this growth.

In the Middle East, according to the Gulf News, the alternative energy sector in United Arab Emirates will likely see average annual growth levels of 25%; moreover, alternative energy is expected to represent almost 70% of the global energy market by 2030. In addition, it is estimated that alternative energy will eventually account for $600 billion of the approximately $800 billion in global energy infrastructure by 2030, an increase of 400% from current levels. To further illustrate the UAE’s growing profile in the renewable energy sector, Abu Dhabi was recently selected as the headquarters of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), an international organization that promotes the development of the renewable energy sector worldwide. IRENA’s mission is to serve as a resource on renewable energy policy for its member states as well as to facilitate capacity building and technology transfer.

These are a few examples of what countries around the world are doing to address global energy challenges. The range of renewable energy-oriented events taking place every day, all over the world – i.e., solar, wind, geothermal, bio-fuels - is astounding. There is a burgeoning interest in – and demand for – information about renewable energy. WEE Calendar is where it all comes together -- events and business resources covering renewable energy technology, policy, finance, and market opportunities. WEECalendar.com™ helps governments, businesses, scientists, venture capital companies, event planners and other visitors to learn more about what’s happening around the world in renewable energy.
